Ellis’s background in theater, media and education informs most of his dramatic works. However, his first published play, Divinity Place (publisher: StageRights) is a comedy inspired by his own parents’ fraught wedding on the eve of World War II (Staged Reading, New York Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Premiere production: North St. Playhouse).
All Save One (winner, Julie Harris Playwriting Award) is a comedy-drama inspired by the “lavender marriages” in Hollywood of the 1950s (Staged Reading: Kennedy Center Page-to-Stage. Premiere production: Washington Stage Guild).
Dead Air (Dominion Stage Best Play Award; Finalist, Baltimore Playwrights Festival; Todd McEnerney Award; Staged Reading, Kennedy Center Page-to-Stage. Full Production set for 2026 at Dominion Stage) follows the tragic path of a successful daytime talk show host and her reclusive son.
The short play “Gelsey and Mick” (Grafton Hills College New Works Festival) is dedicated to survivors of suicide.
Culver City Fever (Staged Readings: Kennedy Center Page-to-Stage, North St. Playhouse, New York Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Palisades Theater), subtitled “Scenes from a Show Business Friendship,” centers on the decades-long rivalry between two female actors.
The Other Cheek (Staged Reading, Dramatists Guild Footlights Series) brings a victim of violence face to face with his attacker in hopes of finding forgiveness.
“Roman Fever,” an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s short story of the same name (Staged Readings: North St. Playhouse, Classic Theatre of Maryland).
Of All the Trees (West Hollywood Festival selection, finalist Morgan-Wixson new play festival, Staged Reading, PrideFest and Colonial Players of Annapolis) follows the protagonist's sometimes comical, sometimes touching Yuletide encounters with his inner demons.
"The Calling," a short comic sketch about the Vatican's "customer service line" (Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights 2022 Short Play festival, full staging, North St. Playhouse)
Vera, Chuck and Dave, a comedy with music about three veteran actors vying for a three-line part (staged readings: North St. Playhouse, Colonial Players of Annapolis, Baltimore Playwrights Festival.
He is also a published poet and literature scholar and biographer and wrote host segments for the film anthology series “ShortStories.” Ellis holds a BA in Drama from Catholic University, an MA in English (Literature) from Salisbury University and has done graduate work in Cinema Studies at NYU. He has studied playwriting with Lucas Hnath (A Doll’s House Part 2, The Christians) and acting with Austin Pendleton (HB Studio).
In addition to performing in more than fifty stage productions to date, Ellis also teaches English and created a popular course at the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning entitled “Ten Plays Everyone Should Know,” which has spawned multiple “sequels.” He is a one-day Jeopardy! Champion, thanks to the Final Jeopardy category: “Characters in Plays!”
